Clipsal 500: Mostert, Pye share qualifying spoils at Adelaide

DJR Team Penske's Scott Pye and Prodrive's Chaz Mostert conquer qualifying at the V8 Supercars Clipsal 500 with maiden and return pole position efforts.
DJR Team Penske's Scott Pye and Prodrive's Chaz Mostert will start the 2016 V8 Supercars season from the front of the field in tomorrow's opening two races after dictating the qualifying pace at the Clipsal 500.

Pye was the first of the two Ford runner's to hit the front on Friday afternoon by producing a blistering 1 minute 20.0168 second lap, trumping Red Bull Racing's Jamie Whincup, in typical V8 fashion, by less than a tenth to claim his maiden pole in the series.

While Mostert could only muster 12th in the opening session, albeit just 0.4's off Pye's benchmark, the 2015 qualifying ace stayed true to his name and notched up his first pole position of 2016.

Mostert's 11th career pole is all the more remarkable as the 23-year old makes his competitive return to racing following a prolonged period of injury.

The Supercheap Auto Racing driver suffered a horrifying shunt at last season's Bathurst 1000 event and was forced to miss the remainder of the 2015 season after sustaining multiple injuries.

Six-time champion Whincup once again came tantalisingly close to pole position but was forced to settle for second in as many session's.

Like Whincup, Volvo's Scott McLaughlin produced a carbon copy of his first qualifying effort to line up third ahead of Holden's James Courtney and Red Bull debutant Shane Van Gisbergen.

While race one pole-sitter Pye remained a factor in the second session, the DJR Penske driver ultimately failed to replicate his earlier effort, leaving him seventh behind top Nissan effort Michael Caruso.

It was a mixed afternoon of sorts for reigning champion Mark Winterbottom but the Bottle-0 Racing man remains firmly in contention, placing himself fourth and tenth for tomorrow's opening encounters.

Last season's runner-up Craig Lowndes will begin his 2016 assault, boasting the new TeamVortex colours, on the fringes of the top-ten in eleventh and ninth.
