Record-breaker Lowes ‘can go faster’
Sam Lowes has hinted he can shave more tenths from the spectacular record-breaking lap time he produced during provisional qualifying for the opening round of the World Supersport Championship at Phillip Island.

The Yakhnich Yamaha rider has been in scintillating form around the Australian circuit since his arrival, but while many were already impressed by his 1min 33.294secs lap in FP1 – already six tenths faster than the existing lap record -, Lowes would go on to slash his personal best in Q1 with a remarkable 1min 32.294secs effort.

While records were always expected to fall on the newly resurfaced circuit, Lowes's performance was still enough to put more than a second between himself and Kenan Sofuoglu, while he was also 1.5secs faster than third place man Roberto Rolfo.

Perhaps even more impressive, the lap would have placed him just 1.2secs adrift of the quickest lap time on the World Superbike Q1 timesheets too.

Even so, while Lowes was delighted with his rapid pace – which included 11 laps below 1min 34secs -, he believes he can extract more from his YZF-R6.

“I am glad to improve results on this bike,” he said. “We made some changes in the settings and here I am. I know that I didn't have to make the most of the bike, but it turned out to be quick. I think I can go quicker by a few tenths on one fast lap.”
