WSS » Lowes philosophical despite missed victory

A canny race strategy by Kenan Sofuoglu blunts Sam Lowes's hopes of victory on his Yakhnich Yamaha debut at Phillip Island.
Lowes philosophical despite missed victory
Sam Lowes says he can be content with his second place finish in the opening World Supersport Championship race at Phillip Island, despite being unable to replicate his dominant pace from free practice and qualifying.

The Briton came into the race as the favourite to turn a record-shattering pole position into victory on his debut with Yakhnich Yamaha, but found himself up against a tough competitor in reigning champion Kenan Sofuoglu.

An entertaining scrap that would see Lowes have the edge through the bends to out-brake Sofuoglu for the lead on five occasions into the turn four hairpin, his Yamaha was nonetheless no match for the ZX-6R in a straight line.

Each time overtaken on the run to the first corner, Lowes's momentum would drop in the closing laps as Sofuoglu edged away to secure the victory. Despite being visibly disappointed on the podium, Lowes was nonetheless content with a positive start to his Yamaha tenure.

“Sofuoglu restrained me during the whole race,” he said. “He knew that if I could overtake him he couldn't win. It's a great start to the season, the bike is great and the team are working really well so I believe we can fight for the win!”

Despite being unable to win, second place still marks Yakhnich Yamaha's best result at WSS level.
