George Russell, KF3 Champion - Q&A

22 January 2013

2012 saw George Russell make history by winning the European KF3 Championship for the second year running. On the Friday of the Autosport International Show, he spoke to Simon Stiel about the upcoming season. He will race for Birel in KF2.

Crash.net
When did you arrive at your decision with Birel?

George Russell
The decision came just before Christmas but we officially signed the contract just three days ago. That's what we're going to be doing for this year, KF in the WSK and CIK events using TM engines.

Crash.net
When did Birel get in touch with you about the possibility of a drive?

George Russell
They got in touch with us in late October at the World Championship in Zuera. That's when they first approached us and since then we did a test day with them. I really liked the team and the kart. Everything just felt right so we decided to join the team for this year.

Crash.net
As well as becoming double KF3 champion, you also had a season long battle with Alex Gill. How do you think you improved as a driver last season?

George Russell
Every race I go to I'm improving and improving the chassis, the engine and learning more every time we go out. Yeah, this year's been tough in the British championship. We've won just under the half of races that we could have managed to take the championship but, it's been a good year.

Crash.net
When will you get the first opportunity to test the kart?

George Russell
We've just arrived back from Italy actually testing the new engine. We're currently doing a lot of development work since as you may know there's a new homologation out this year so all the engines are new. It's going to be a case of whoever tries the hardest and puts in the work for the first race.

Crash.net
Would you say you have a particular driving style?

George Russell
No, I wouldn't say so. I feel I have a driving style for the different conditions and I drive differently for how the kart suits and how the track suits me.

Crash.net
Do you feel you're able to get the best out of a chassis? You think you're adaptable?

George Russell
I think so. To be an all-round driver, that's what you have to be. That's what I'll be trying to do this year.

Crash.net
Do you feel it will be different with KF2 since the engines behave differently? How do you think you'll adapt to that?

George Russell
I'll be able to tell you after the first race.

Crash.net
What do you see your objectives being over the year?

George Russell
Basically it's going to be my last year in karting. What I'm hoping to do is go off and win the World Championship. That's what I'm hoping to do and that'll be the main objective.

Crash.net
Are you going to be moving to Italy on a permanent basis?

George Russell
Not on a permanent basis but I will be out there testing.

Crash.net
What will it mean for your school-work?

George Russell
At the moment I have a private tutor so I do school work over Skype. I also have one tutor at home who I go and see regularly.
