Moya: WRC deeply saddened by Bastuck's death

Subaru's sporting director, Luis Moya has sent a message of support to the friends and family of Aaron Burkart's co-driver, Jorg Bastuck, who was killed on the Rally Catalunya on Friday.

Bastuck passed away on SS2 after a tragic accident, when he was hit by the Ford Fiesta of Barry Clark, as he was changing a wheel on the Citroen C2. Burkart and Bastuck were attending to their car after going off the road on the first run through the El Montmell stage. Although the 36-year-old was airlifted to hospital, his injuries were too severe.

"Regardless of our own team situation, the leg's competition has been overshadowed by the death of a fellow competitor earlier today," commented Moya. "We were deeply saddened to hear that Jorg Bastuck died of his injuries from the accident on SS2 and our thoughts and sympathies go out to his friends and family at this time."

Sebastien Loeb's co-driver, Daniel Elena meanwhile felt it was a freak incident.

"You can only blame the most terrible bad luck," he added. "Who could have said that two cars would go off in quick succession at the same place? But for everybody, this brings back some horrible memories."

Indeed last year, Markko Martin's co-driver, Michael Park lost his life, when the Estonian lost control of his Peugeot on the final day of the Wales Rally GB. Although the incident was very different, it is a stark reminder just how dangerous motorsport can be.
