PWRC: Araujo confirmed as champion

Armindo Araujo named as the PWRC title winner after Court of Appeal demotes rival Nasser Al-Attiyah in Acropolis results
Armindo Araujo has been confirmed as the 2009 FIA Production Car World Rally Champion, despite the FIA International Court of Appeal reinstating Nasser Al-Attiyah into the results of the Acropolis Rally of Greece.

The ICA found a breach of rules had taken place when Al-Attiyah's car was found to have a non-compliant crankshaft fitted and overturned the original penalty handed out by the Stewards to the Barwa Rally Team of exclusion from the event.

However, the Court of Appeal instead ruled that Al-Attiyah should be demoted in the results to 13th place in the PWRC classification – a non-points scoring position.

This means that Araujo and co-driver Miguel Ramalho have an unassailable eleven point lead entering the final round of the series, Rally GB later this month, while Al-Attiyah is in a four-way battle for the runner-up position.
