Raikkonen cans Australia entry, tests 908

24 August 2011

Kimi Raikkonen has elected to can his planned entry into Rally Australia to focus on the remaining events on the World Rally Championship calendar.

The Finn had been set to contest the event early next month at the wheel of his ICE 1 Racing Citroen DS3 WRC but has now decided to change his plans due to the logistical and organisational difficulties in taking part.

Having made the decision to skip the event, Raikkonen will therefore compete in three more rounds of the WRC this season – in France, Spain and Great Britain.

News that Raikkonen is to miss Rally Australia comes as rumours about his future plans increase, with the former F1 champion spending today [Wednesday] testing a Peugeot 908 sportscar in Spain.

Raikkonen was quoted in his homeland this week as saying that he would love to compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours but is also believed to be keen to do so only if a deal included other races outside the La Sarthe classic.

It remains to be seen whether the test will lead to a race seat for Raikkonen for 2012, although he wouldn't be the first big name addition to Peugeot's line-up if he did agree to race for the team – with Sebastien Loeb, Jacques Villeneuve and Sebastian Bourdais having competed in a 908 at Le Mans in recent years.
