Heartbreak for Andersson and Proton in Monte Carlo.
Proton Motorsport man P-G Andersson has retired from Rallye Monte Carlo with just two stages to go.
Andersson, who had led the SWRC class throughout in his Satria Neo S2000, and who had been running in the top-ten from SS4, had looked set to take maximum points in the SWRC, as well as two 'senior' WRC points for P9 overall (a position he had been in since SS10 on Thursday). However it all went wrong in the penultimate test today, the repeat-run through the 23.41 km Moulinet-La Bollène Vésubie stage, SS16. Unconfirmed reports suggest he had a mechanical issue - possibly a fuel leak, which resulted in a small fire.
Andersson's retirement hands the SWRC lead to Craig Breen, who had been more than 7 minutes adrift.
