STOP PRESS: Latvala wins Rally Sweden

12 February 2012

Ford World Rally Team's Jari-Matti Latvala has come through to secure victory on Rally Sweden.

Latvala, who began today's leg with a 23 second lead, increased that margin to 35.6 seconds this morning, and that proved pivotal in the end, as a puncture in SS22 on the final loop cost him over 20 seconds. Latvala eventually took P1 and beat his former team-mate, Mikko Hirvonen by 16.6 seconds.

Mads Ostberg meanwhile took the final place on the podium. Ostberg had closed to within 5 seconds of Petter Solberg this morning setting things up for a good fight over the last three tests. Solberg though also had a puncture in Lesjofors 2, just like Latvala, which settled the matter and left him fourth, 35.5 seconds adrift.

Evgeny Novikov completed the top five, while Citroen's Sebastien Loeb had to be content with sixth after a pretty poor weekend by his standards. Loeb did take the Power Stage win, however, which was some consolation for the Frenchman as it gives him the maximum 3 bonus points. Solberg was second in the final test and Latvala third.
