Suspected alternator problem robs Dani Sordo and Ford of well deserved third in Argentina
'Sad' finish for Sordo after doing 'perfect job'

Dani Sordo has thanked Ford for the chance to take in Rally Argentina last weekend, despite the massive disappointment at the end.

Sordo, who was standing in for the injured Jari-Matti Latvala, put in a superb performance and ran in the top-three virtually throughout. However unfortunately he was forced out with a suspected alternator problem just 4km from the end of the 502km rally, the longest WRC round for almost a decade.

“At the finish of the penultimate stage there were alarms flashing in the car indicating a battery problem,” he explained. “We started the final stage but less than 1km into the test the car stopped.”

Despite that though, he was still encouraged by his form and rightly so, given he had only had a one-day test prior to the event with the Fiesta RS WRC car.

“It's a disappointing way to finish, but the weekend was a good experience,” he continued. “I was happy with my performance. Finishing was our goal so not to do so was sad, but it was good working with the team.

"I'd like to thank Ford and M-Sport for giving me the opportunity to drive the Fiesta RS WRC. I really loved the car and really enjoyed my four days of Rally Argentina.”

Ford boss Malcolm Wilson meanwhile was impressed with how the Prodrive WRC Team MINI John Cooper Works WRC man performed.

“Dani did a perfect job and it was desperately sad for him to retire so close to the finish. The fact that the voltage in the car was so low indicates it was an alternator problem,” he added.

I think Ford and MSport should be thanking Dani instead of the other way around - hopefully it will lead to a seat for him longterm. He has proven the car is competitive in the right hands, think he would do very well in it with a little more testing, dialled in to his own setup and more competitive KM's also.

Great performance from him, pity the car was unreliable in the end, in fairness to Citroen their reliability is superb - and has been for many years, thats why they have so many makes and drivers titles.

Dani Sordo should be with the Ford team in place of Solberg. Don't get me wrong, I like Solberg and he is an ex-WRC champion. But Solberg is now past his prime best and can not offer top results based upon his own performance (in the long run). Also, Solberg is a one-dimensional, gravel ace and can not excel on tarmac.
