Petter Solberg: I had to try...

28 May 2012

Ford's Petter Solberg has defended his decision to go all out for the win in Greece, even if it did ultimately end in disappointment.

Solberg had set his sights on a 'clean run' pre-event and he was eager to keep his points scoring run intact, sadly though, he crashed in the first stage on Sunday morning, while pushing to try and close the 10.2 second gap to eventual winner, Sebastien Loeb.

It was a bitter blow, especially after three consecutive stage wins on Saturday afternoon had seen him halve the Frenchman's advantage and had brought him right back into contention.

“The plan was to push and try to take two or three seconds back on the first stage. I wanted to put pressure on Loeb, I had to try. After the opening 10km we were equal on time so I decided to push a bit harder,” Solberg explained.

“But as I approached a long left bend in a narrow downhill section, I hit the bank on the right of the road and then the car bounced into the bank on the opposite side. The impact knocked the left rear wheel off and that was it.

“I feel so sorry for the team because I wanted to win but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Until the accident my driving was perfect with no mistakes.

“It's disappointing but I must look ahead to the next rally and stay positive,” he concluded.
