Ostberg sidelined in Mexico

9 March 2013

Qatar M-Sport World Rally Team driver Mads Ostberg has had to retire from day two of Rally Mexico due to an electrical issue.

Ostberg finished Friday's opening leg in second place overall and keen to try and challenge Sebastian Ogier for the lead. Despite a clutch issue, he was second in the first test of the day, Ibarrilla 1, 8.4 seconds off the leader.

However disaster struck en-route to SS15 and the Norwegian was forced to park his Ford Fiesta RS WRC car.

“That's it, an electrical issue puts us out of the rally!” Ostberg confirmed via social networking site, Facebook.

“The first problem was a clutch problem - a leak from a small pipe and the pedal was not working,” he continued back in service.

“We managed quite okay in a few places on the [first] stage [of the day, SS14] but then I understood we had to get into neutral, stop, re-start and go. It was a broken pipe. We knew it was going to be hard and we could lose time.”

“But then, on the road section [to SS15], an alarm for the alternator came on and it took five minutes to empty the battery and that was that. We tried to look for obvious problems but it was too late,” he added.

“This is my biggest disappointment ever in a rally - to be fighting for a good result and to have a second place but then nothing. Right now I'll allow myself to be disappointed and then I will move on...”
