WRC Portugal 2013: Ogier survives scare as VW wobbles

14 April 2013

Sebastien Ogier remains in the lead on Rally de Portugal, although it has been a dramatic and nerve racking start to the final day for Volkswagen.

Ogier lost over 30 seconds in the opening test, with clutch problems threatening to ruin his weekend. He was back on it in the next test though, and with his issues seemingly fixed, recorded the second best time. The Frenchman now lies 49.3 seconds up on Citroen's Mikko Hirvonen with just two stages to run.

Team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala meanwhile was also dogged by problems in the sister Polo R WRC, and suspected front differential problem saw him lose over a minute in SS12 and over 3 minutes in SS13, dropping him from second to third, although he remains 41.4secs up on Qatar M-Sport WRT man Evgeny Novikov in P4.

Behind, Nasser Al-Attiyah, Andreas Mikkelsen and Dennis Kuipers continue to run in positions 5 through to 7, with Martin Prokop having hauled himself up from P10 overnight to eighth.

WRC2 class leader Esapekka Lappi and Khalid Al-Qassimi lie ninth and tenth respectively, the latter almost 2.5 minutes ahead of Rally 2 runner Mads Ostberg.

The event now concludes with repeat-runs through Silves and Almodovar. SS14, Silves 2, is due to start at 12.31 hours local time.
