Latvala selects 13th for Sardinia starting position

20 June 2013

After setting the best time in qualifying on Thursday morning for this weekend's Rally Italia Sardegna, Volkswagen's Jari-Matti Latvala has unsurprisingly opted to take the lowest starting position available to him for the first stage on Friday morning.

Latvala selected the 13th slot in the running order, and there were no surprises after that as the qualifying classification order was completely reversed by the drivers all eager to start as low down as possible.

That means Qatar M-Sport WRT's Evgeny Novikov took the next-best starting position of 12th slot after finishing just behind Latvala in qualifying, and championship leader Sébastien Ogier will start 11th in the running order.

Inevitably, the slowest qualifier on Thursday morning was left with the unenviable task of preparing the way for the cars to follow: Khalid Al-Qassimi will once again be the first man on the road, the Abu Dhabi Citroën becoming the principal 'sweeper' in the dusty gravel conditions in Sardinia

He will be followed out on the first stage by Michal Kosciuszko in the Lotos Team Ford Fiesta RS WRC, with Welshman Elfyn Evans taking the third spot on the road for Qatar M-Sport WRT ahead of fellow Ford Fiesta man Per-Günnar Andersson competing for AT-Rally.

Qassimi will take the start of the 31.08-kilometre SS1 Monte Lerno 1 at 7.58am local time.
