Wales Rally GB bosses back TV announcement
26 June 2013
ITV4 is to air highlights of the World Rally Championship to UK viewers for the remainder of the 2013 season after agreement was reached with WRC Promoter GmbH – the new commercial rights holder for the series.
While the coverage started a number of months ago, agreement has now been reached that confirms coverage of each of the remaining rounds on the schedule, which will air on both ITV4 and ITV4 HD.
An hour-long highlights package will air in the week after each event and will be available 'on demand' via the ITV Player after airing on TV.
Alongside the regular shows, ITV4 will also air additional coverage of Wales Rally GB in November, with 30 minute highlights on both the Friday and Saturday evenings; a move welcomed by event organisers.
“This is fantastic news for the vast numbers of hard-core rally fans here in the UK as well as for a much wider television audience seeking some truly breath-taking entertainment,” Andrew Coe, Chief Executive of International Motor Sports Limited, said. “Top class rallying is one of the world's most spectacular sports and now UK viewers can follow all the thrilling action as the WRC travels around the globe en route to what's going to be a fitting finale right here in the legendry Welsh forests.
“With its strong reputation for screening world-class sports such as the Champions League and the Tour de France, ITV4 is the perfect broadcaster for WRC. More importantly perhaps, these very welcome programmes will not only provide UK rally enthusiasts with free-to-air WRC coverage for the first time in five years but also help to introduce an all-new generation of thrill-seeking fans to what's possibly the most stunning form of motor sport.”
ITV4 already airs coverage of the British Touring Car Championship and the British Superbike Championship.
