Hirvonen elects to run last

31 July 2013

Unsurprisingly, Mikko Hirvonen has elected to run last on the road after topping the times in qualifying for the latest round of the World Rally Championship in Finland this weekend.

The Finn beat Sebastien Ogier to top spot during the qualifying stage to earn the right to select his starting position and took the decision to start 14th and last of those drivers running in WRC machinery.

As such, Hirvonen will now hope to benefit from having the drivers in front 'sweep' the road during the six stages that make up the first day of action on Thursday.

“We don't know how much it will rain tomorrow,” he said. “If it rains then start position will be important, but if it doesn't then it won't be as important. I don't think it's so crucial to win qualifying in this rally but it's still nice to be fastest.”

There was little surprise to see Hirvonen's rivals follow suit in each picking the latest starting position possible, meaning the running order is the exact opposite of the times set in qualifying.

As a result, the MINI John Cooper Works WRC of Riku Tahko will be first into the 5.50km Himos stage when the competitive action gets underway at 12.15pm local time on Thursday afternoon.
