ERC: Skoda considers joining the R5 revolution

15 August 2013

Skoda is considering building a car to the new R5 regulations with motorsport director Pavel Hortek confirming that the category represents 'one of the best options for the future'.

Skoda has already trialled a turbocharged engine in one of its all-conquering Fabia Super 2000 models as it continues to assess the practicalities of an R5 project which would put it up against Citroën, M-Sport/Ford and Peugeot, who are all committed to the new-generation class.

“The R5 category is definitely one of the best options for the future and we have to pay attention to it,” Hortek told the Inside ERC programme recently, “We are following our competitors from the teams of [M-Sport] and Peugeot with great interest. At the moment, however, I can only tell you that we are following ERC and APRC with Jan Kopecký and Esapekka Lappi.”

Skoda's pursuit of a second consecutive ERC drivers' title following Juho Hänninen's success in 2012 continues on the all-asphalt Barum Czech Rally Zlín, where Kopecky is expected to be among the favourites for victory.
