You can't compare these riders / drivers, but it does bring back good memories. Re the greatest on bikes - it has to be between Rossi and Hailwood. In F1 between Fangio and Rossi. Fangio only started in F1 in his late 30's and only raced a few years, but won 5 championships - his win percentage has to be outstanding.

Re Fogarty v Joey. Joey was outstanding, but Fogarty had more raw speed - he beat Dunlop in the F1 Superbike class (if you add his F1 bike titles and endurance to WSB he has 8 world titles). Fogarty also set lap records at the IOM racing against Hislop - they were much faster than their rivals in the early 90's.

They have all given great pleasure and are racining heros.

Sorry about double post. If I was in the pub I would most want a drink with Joey, then Hailwood and Rossi - Carl would be a distant last choice as a drinking buddy.

I remember the flying scotsman alas the late great Bob Mac beating Mike the bike by a country mile
1962 at the ulster GP Mike was second ahead of a host of greats many multiple world champions and the largest field of works Hondas ever Honda were out with a vengence to win the 250 WC. Bob was superb changed up 100 yards before anyone else down the straight was a whisker of setting the first 100 mph lap it wasn't topped to the heady days of 6 cylinder Hondas and v4 Yamahas. He never was a WC but boy could he ride a bike, first to lap the island at over a ton. The reason for my tale is Mike the bike
was/is considered to be the greatest rider of his day but that day Mac was the masterO51Y

Anyone who saw Carl Fogarty race knows that they were in the presence of a really special racer. Carl won, not because he was insanely talented but because he had drive, complete faith in himself and a willingness to ride around a bikes problems until it completely fell apart on him. CF won many times when neither he nor his bike had any right to be on a race track.
Valentino Rossi is a wizard on a motorcycle: he can do things I've never seen any other rider do. He and Hailwood are the greatest riders of all time.
But that is why I love to see Casey Stoner race: not as talented as Rossi, riding a bike that no-one else can ride but competitive because he has the drive, faith and determination

What about John Surtees 3 350cc 4 500cc and a f1 world championships 8 in all. This thread could go forever and I've had the good fortune to have seen them all starting with Geoff Duke and they were all great in their day I watch old pre war videos little skinny tyres brakes that would be flat out stopping a pushbike on suspension these men were heroes with all the computers slick tyres etc the modern rider has plus in my case alone 55 years of tecnical advancement the modern rider would **** himself if you put him on a Brough superior and told him to wind it up to a ton. Don't get me wrong I reckon Rossi, and a few others are outstanding racers but not many of them will make WC sorry

I would like to see Bayliss have a go in the TT,
mind you, I would also like to see Rossi and the rest of the MoTogp and WSBK riders in the TT!, that would sort the men from the boys! :)

There had to be excuse to bring up classics, its all reletive yes they were skinny tyres, crap supension bla bla droannnnn but they also were f...g slow and the riders level of fitness and dedication was miles away from today, put them on a modern bike and by the time they saw the corner coming they'b be in the gravel, hooray Henry's playing at it and before you start for their time yes they were brave but their not comparable IMO, leave them in a museum where they belong :-o

Well, the statistics prove it. Even after a couple of lean years, Rossi is still the GOAT. If he races on til his early 30's, then he will probably break more records.

I can only talk about Valentino as it is only fair, I am his fan till death claim me. Schumacher may be the best in his category, but I am not his fan - Ayrton Senna is the greatest for me. Superbike, I happened to like/follow Colin Edward before he went to motoGP, so can't give a fair comment for Troy. It is not very nice to make unfair comment on something I am not involve. Achievement is achievement, but why want people to compare there achievement - they are in all sort of different category
