The guy is 7th in the championship ahead of waaaay more experienced riders. If this was any other year and if Spies wasn't his teammate, Sykes would be viewed much more highly. He's doing a very good job for a regular rookie. No, he's not Spies, but who is?

While Mladin is a good (I said good...not great) rider, I think you're dreaming to think he would come over and that he and Spies would dominate WSBK. Mladin's success has only been on the Yosh Suzuki...a bike which has millions of $$$ thrown at it every year and makes the other bikes look like undeveloped garbage. His years on a Ducati weren't as successful for him. He's an unknown quantity on the world stage and has only dominated with one brand and team. Take him away from his team and that Yosh zook and we'll see the Mladin from his Cagiva and Fast by Feracci Ducati days.

pp916 - yes that is absolutely correct that WSS riders have done squat once promoted to WSBK. You point out Rea being on the top step and while you are correct he joins a fraternity of 5 WSS graduate riders to stand on the top step in the last 10 years!!...Vermeulen, Pitt, Xaus, Fabrizio and himself. Case in point:

Chambone: flop
Fujiwara : flop
Foret: flop
Sofuoglo:flop
Nannelli : decent rides here and there
Muggeridge : flop

and the list goes on and on.

"WSS riders have done squat once promoted to WSBK."

Like Rea, Crutchlow is a proven and very capable superbike rider spending a year in WSS. Applying the statistical handicap of failed WSS riders from the past just doesn't hold in this case. Anybody who has seen Crutchlow perform on a superbike will know beyond doubt he can more than cut it in the bigger class. Sykes knows it and Yamaha knows it, and Tom is absolutely right to be concerned for his ride.

Yamaha should get Donington for a day of testing and invite Spies, Sykes, Crutchlow, Camier, Ellison, Toseland and Edwards to do their best on the R1.

I bet Spies would cover them all but who would be 2nd and 3rd???? Let the cream rise to the top eh.

I'm sure that JT & CE would never accept but it still would be interesting even without them.

given time to get a proper setup i think it would be tough to dicede first between spies, crutchlow, toseland and edwards. toseland needs to get back to what he does best and thats on a superbike.
i really don't think spies would be a top five racer in gp. he's a great superbike rider but i think he would be another of flops.

There was nothing between Crutchlow and Sykes during their time together in BSB.Unfortunately for Tom, Cal made the right move in spending a season in WSS.Tom on the other hand didn't reckon on having such a special team-mate and has thus been made to look ordinary.Such a shame Tom didn't follow Cal down the WSS route as they could both be negotiating top rides for 2010 instead of Tom looking nervously over his shoulder. My ideal scenario would be for Ben to take his sublime talents to Moto GP and Cal to join Tom at Yamaha then let battle commence!

I dont think he is good enough i didnt take to him in bsb and still havent took to him in wsbk. he seems so big headed to me i met him a few times when he was in bsb and he is so into his self. maybe if he concetrated on what he is doing instead of himself he would do much better.

Vimto - Cal didn't choose - Yamaha agreed contracts with Cal and Tom then after they were both signed decided which rider would do WSB and which would do WSS. I presume the logic was that when Ben signed for Yamaha they knew they had the superbikes covered and as Cal had the best chance of a good result in WSS the logical thing was to put Tom in WSB.

Whoever is making the decisions in Yamaha has certainly made some inspired ones - they will probably lift the WSB and WSS titles this year.

Mladin has stated several times he would do a wild card ride as long as he had competitive equipment.

No one has offered it up.

Blame the factories, not Mladin.

Do a little research before you go calling someone a chicken sh!t........
