Q&A: Claudio Domenicali, Ducati Corse MD

8 May 2002

Questions to and answers from Ducati Corse managing director Claudio Domenicali in the build up to the Monza round of the World Superbike championship.

Q:
Why are more racers using Ducatis this year in the World Superbike Championship than any other brand ?

Claudio Domenicali:
From a strategic point of view, we decided to sell to customers our racing bikes with a very good
level of performance. This is the secret for there being so many Ducatis on the grid. There are three factory bikes, but also many other private bikes because of the level of performance of the bike that it is possible to buy directly.

Q:
Does the fact that Ducati is going to Grand Prix mean that there will be less involvement in World Superbikes ?

CD:
Next year we will have two factory teams, one in World Superbikes and one in Grand Prix. We will have two teams of two riders, which means we will just have one less rider in Superbikes than today.

Q:
Will the technology that Ducati is developing for Grand Prix racing be useful for the Superbike and production Ducatis ?

CD:
The development that we do in racing is what the customer can get on the production bikes. In the new Grand Prix formula, we are working on a 990 cc 4-stroke engine and everything we do is related to production bikes, even if they are full prototypes. So a lot of Grand Prix technology can be related to the production bikes.

Q:
What do you think of the relationship between Ducati and Michelin regarding racing ?

CD:
We have been working with Michelin for a long time with a lot of success. It is a very good partner for us and we will definitely try to go together for the next challenges in the future. Many other factors are related, like a rider's preference for a tyre manufacturer or not. So the choice we will make for next year will also depend on external factors, but let's say our relationship has never been as good as it is today.
