WSS: Crutchlow: It's not over until it's over

"We were 17 points ahead in 2006 and didn't win" - Wilco Zeelenberg.
Cal Crutchlow heads to Portimao this weekend with the World Supersport title firmly in his sights.

The Yamaha rider has enjoyed an astonishing first year in World Supersport, taking five wins, ten pole positions, ten podiums and nine fastest laps from the 13 rounds so far.

That has handed him a commanding 19 point lead over championship rival Eugene Laverty (Honda) going into the final round.

"It's going to be a tough weekend," said Crutchlow. "There are plenty of things to concentrate on but I'm looking forward to it, it's not over until it's over! I need to concentrate on the job in hand, not to win the race but to win the title. We've worked hard for it all year, so we need to go there and make it happen."

Crutchlow and team mate Fabien Foret spent two days testing at the Portuguese circuit last week, although conditions were not ideal it gave the riders an opportunity to re-acquaint themselves with the track.

"We had a test at Portimao last week, so both riders are now ready for the race having had some valuable track time,” said team manager Wilco Zeelenberg. “It will be a very exciting round for us, we are ready to rock and roll for the last one and we're looking forward to a good result. We don't want to think too much about it but we are really trying to get the championship.

“It's not over yet though; we've been there before, we were 17 points ahead in 2006 [with Kevin Curtain] and didn't win, anything can happen,” he warned. “Cal knows what he needs to do in the race so we're going to give him all the support he need as and we believe we can take the title on Sunday."

Laverty and Parkalgar Honda also tested at Portimao last week.
