Rea sweeps day two at Portimao

23 January 2010

Jonathan Rea ended the second day of World Superbike pre-season testing in front as he made the most of drier conditions to maintain his place at the top of the timesheets.

The Northern Irishman was quickest in the wet during the morning session, but while the track improved as the day wore on, Rea was once again the man to beat.

A flurry of quick laps towards the end of the session had Leon Haslam fastest heading into the final minutes before Rea pumped in a time of 1min 49.107secs, two tenths faster than his Suzuki rival.

Completing another outstanding day for the British contingent, Rea and Haslam were joined by countrymen Cal Crutchlow and Tom Sykes inside the top five, the quartet sandwiching BMW's Troy Corser in third position.

Additionally, the results were also notable for there being six different manufacturers inside the top six in the order of Honda, Suzuki, BMW, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Ducati, the latter being ridden by Noriyuki Haga, who made it out on track this afternoon.

First to break the pattern was Ruben Xaus in seventh on the second BMW, ahead of Sylvain Guintoli, Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa.

All 20 riders made it out on track for the afternoon session, although Shane Byrne – who skipped the morning – only completed nine laps aboard the Althea Ducati. Countrymen Leon Camier and James Toseland, meanwhile, were 11th and 15th quickest respectively.

Testing concludes tomorrow [Sunday]
