Toseland: We could have done a similar time to Cal

10 April 2010

James Toseland has joked that 'lady luck' is not shining on him so far this season after missing out on a Superpole shootout by just a thousandth of a second in Valencia.

Toseland will start the third round of the season in ninth position after a flurry of fast laps late on demoted him at the end of the second knockout phase.

Further investigation reveals that while Toseland missed out on the eighth he needed by one thousandth of a second, he was also just two thousandths off seventh too. His mood was further exacerbated by the timing screen errors that initially stated that he'd made it through.

Indeed, Toseland went on to reveal that, like pole sitting Yamaha team-mate Cal Crutchlow, he had a spare qualifying tyre available for the final session, the former champion going on to claim that he could have been joining his fellow Briton up front had he made it through.

"Lady luck doesn't seem to be shining on me at the start of this season! To lose out by one thousandth is a frustrating blow, especially as I knew the time was there. I wanted to save my second qualifier for the last Superpole session, for sure we could have done a similar time to Cal. It was definitely possible.

“Congratulations to Cal for another pole position, putting the bike where it should be. I'm disappointed for the team because we've worked really well this weekend and improved the bike again. To lose out on the top eight by such a small time and then the confusion when the screens went down is very frustrating.

“We've come a long way with the package so we just need to get a good start tomorrow because we know we have the race pace."
