Melandri: WSBK is the right choice for me
8 November 2010
Marco Melandri says switching to the World Superbike Championship next season is the 'right choice' for his career as he brought down the curtain on his time in MotoGP at the Valencia Grand Prix.
Melandri will join Yamaha in World Superbikes next season following a trying season with Gresini Honda, the Italian having become particularly vocal in recent weeks over his lack of pace on the bike.
Finishing 13th in what could be his last-ever grand prix, Melandri acknowledged the part that MotoGP has played in his career, but insists he has no qualms about turning his back on it.
"I don't want to talk about the race,” he conceded. “I would rather look to the future because I think we have seen that the right choice right now for me is to end this story and start a new one. Having said that it has been a big part of my life and I am the person I am today partly because of MotoGP.
“I want to thank all the people who have stayed close to me and also those who have been against me because they have helped me to grow. Thanks to all the sponsors who have accompanied me over these years and everybody who has worked with me, my family and my fans, who I will see again next year in another championship."
Melandri, who is expected to test the Yamaha R1 before the year is out, would end his year with tenth in the MotoGP standings and a best finish of fifth at Mugello.
