Rea fine for Imola after horror high-side

31 March 2012

Northern Ireland's Jonathan Rea has confirmed he will be fit to compete in tomorrow's second round of the World Superbike Championship at Imola in Italy.

Rea suffered a sickening high-side during the final Superpole session today as he was chasing a hot lap on his factory Honda CBR1000RR.

The 25-year-old was spat off the machine high into the air and landed heavily on his back, but amazingly was able to walk away from the incident.

On his official Twitter account, @johnathanrea, he later revealed he would be fine to take his place in seventh position on the grid on Sunday.

“That wasn't part of the plan. Pushing that little bit too hard and had a big high-side. Thanks to Alpinestars and Arai for keeping me safe!

“I've read all my mentions and want to thank you for your well wishes. As usual I will do my best tomorrow,” wrote Rea.

Kawasaki's Tom Sykes put in a red-hot lap of 1m 46.748s to claim pole, just under a second faster than Rea's best effort before his chances were halted prematurely.
