Though a fourth and an eighth place finish wouldn't normally suggest a significant change in the overall World Superbike Championship standings, Max Biaggi's modest race day at Assen has actually seen him leapfrog his way to the top of the leaderboard.
An unexpected boost for the Italian at the end of a fairly torrid weekend, Biaggi was fortunate for the rain in race one because his pace in the initial dry phase was only good enough for 13th when it was red flagged. A greater confidence of the wet conditions eventually helped him to a more respectable fourth, though he was relatively off the pace again in the drier race two on the way to eighth.
Nonetheless, with
Carlos Checa failing to score in race two and Tom Sykes retiring from the lead in the opening encounter, Biaggi's solid finishers are all he needs to nudge ahead by one point over the Ducati rider and 13 points over the Kawasaki man.
With the top three enjoying mixed fortunes, it is Sylvain Guintoli who has assumed the headlines where the overall standings are concerned, his 1-2 scoreline catapulting him up to fourth, 26 points off Biaggi.
In fact, it was a fairly good day for the chasing pack, with Marco Melandri level on points with Guintoli, while race two winner Jonathan Rea, Leon Haslam and Eugene Laverty are just one, eight and ten points further behind respectively.
Other riders making good gains include Davide Giugliano, who leaps from 17th to tenth after his maiden
WSBK podium result, while
Michel Fabrizio jumps from 16th to 11th for BMW Italia.
In the manufacturer standings, Guintoli's results have helped Ducati forge a sizeable lead over Aprilia, while BMW have also squeezed ahead of Kawasaki into third, despite its day of missed opportunities.
