A sudden shower forces the first World Superbike race to be temporarily stopped after three laps, but Marco Melandri is already a doubt after crashing on lap one.
Rain halts first WSBK race
The first World Superbike Championship race of the day at Monza has been stopped after three laps following a downpour that contributed to three accidents.

Having started in dry but overcast conditions, the weather quickly turned as the field entered the fourth lap, but the sudden shower was still enough to contribute to John Hopkins, David Salom and Sergio Gadea all crashing at Parabolica.

Prior to that, the race had already claimed a significant victim in Marco Melandri, who high-sided spectacularly out of the final corner, heavily damaging his BMW.

Additionally, Mark Aitchison crashed out at the same bend on the warm-up lap.

Though the race was originally rescheduled for 11.40GMT, an impromptu riders' meeting on the grid has led to a further as they discuss a plan of action.

It is believed the riders are not keen to compete in the damp due to issues with the Pirelli tyres breaking up after just a handful of laps.

If Pirelli can't make a wet tyre that can go HALF distance ..... Remind me why they were awarded the monopoly to supply?

EUROSPORT PLAYER must have a license to rip subscribers off

2 minutes to warm up lap & their broadcast collapses on Microsoft IE8, won't come back up on IE8 OR on Firefox either and is down for the best part of 15 minutes.

Between this and the adverts they routinely spam out they truly are despicable at times.
