Leon Haslam almost came good on his claim that he could challenge for victory from 14th position on the grid after a charging performance in the sole World Superbike race at Monza saw him claim second.
The BMW rider gave himself work to do after qualifying down in 14th position, but was confident his bike had the pace to challenge nonetheless, a statement he hinted at during the short first race start as he scythed up to fifth in just three laps.
Though the eventual cancellation of the race prevented him from building on that, he needed just eight laps to make his mark on the shortened second race as he powered his way up the order to an excellent second place finish.
His best result since joining BMW, Haslam was delighted to show such strong pace and is now looking forward to exerting that confidence at his home circuit of
Donington Park.
“The conditions this weekend were tough, especially today with the track being wet and dry. I felt confident that I was going to be able to fight for a top position. Starting from 14th on the grid was not ideal as overtaking in these conditions is quite difficult as you have to leave the dry racing line.
“My race went really well, but by the time I was in second Tom had already pulled away. Huge credit is due to BMW Motorrad and my crew who did a great job. I am really happy to be back on the podium. I am now looking forward to racing at
Donington which will be my home race.”
