Checa well poised to extend Miller victory run

28 May 2012

Reigning World Superbike Champion Carlos Checa feels he is ready to get back to winning ways at Miller Motorsports Park, despite missing out on a first pole position of the season.

A four-time race winner in eight starts around the American circuit, Checa looked on course to secure his first pole position of the season when he put two tenths between himself and Tom Sykes, but a last gasp effort from Jakub Smrz would demote him to second.

Nonetheless, it still marks his best qualifying performance of the season and comes as he attempts to claw back ground in the fight for the 2012 title following a disappointing weekend at Donington Park. With this in mind, Checa is confident he can maintain his excellent run of form in the United States.

“I've always felt at ease at this track, right from the first year that we raced here," said the Althea Ducati rider. "I have a great feeling with this track and today we were able to do good work.

“I thought I'd taken pole to be honest but Jakub was faster than me today. We're happy to be able to start from the front row of course and I heard that tomorrow should be sunnier so I hope that helps us to make two great races.”
