Hopkins growing in confidence, unhappy with results
11 June 2012
American ace John Hopkins says he is 'regaining his confidence' although the FIXI Crescent Suzuki rider was unhappy with his results at Misano.
Hopkins has endured an injury-blighted campaign but scored his first points since round three of the World Superbike Championship with 14th in the second race.
He finished outside the points in 17th in race one, but Hopkins will take some consolation from finishing both races for the first time this season.
“I can't say that I am too happy with the results, but I am happy because I've done 48-laps today in hard conditions with no problems and I'm regaining my confidence,” he said.
“I didn't make a particularly good start in race one and then got held up in traffic. It took a bit of time, but once in the clear I tried to stay consistent throughout the race.
“My lap times at the end of the race were good, so it's a pity that I lost touch at the start.”
Hopkins was hampered after taking to the gravel when 'Tati' Mercado crashed in front of him, but he managed to regroup to squeeze into the points in 14th place in the second outing.
“We made some quite big changes to the bike for race two and I felt an improvement straight away.
“Starting races from the fifth row of the grid is never easy - especially when the competition is so tough.
“To make matters worse, Mercado high-sided right in front of me early on and he and his bike hit me and forced me off the track and into the gravel,” he said.
“I recovered, rejoined the action and then spent the rest of the race playing catch-up.
“Once again I was running pretty good lap times, but unable to make as much progress as I would've liked because of my grid position.”
