Indonesia return delayed to 2014?

31 July 2012

The World Superbike Championship's return to Indonesia looks set to be delayed by one year until 2014, with India identified as the sole new venue to join the schedule in 2013.

Heralded as a chance to tap into the country's crucial motorcycling market, as well re-enter Asia, the decision to return to Sentul – which hosted the Indonesian round of WSBK between 1994 and 1997 – was officially confirmed in February.

Since then, WSBK organisers Infront have confirmed that India's Buddh International Circuit will debut on the schedule in 2013 to consolidate the series' attempts to capitalise on the huge Asian interest.

However, in an unrelated press release issued by the official WSBK press office announcing an extended television coverage deal with ESPN Star Sports in Asia, it stated 'the World Superbike calendar will feature two new races - India from 2013 and possibly Indonesia from 2014 onwards - that will be sure to bolster interest in Asia'.

The statement comes after rumours began circulating in April that Sentul's place on the calendar was subject to conditions, including the complete resurfacing of the circuit.

If Sentul isn't included on the final schedule, it will mark the second time in five years that it has failed to make the final cut having been provisionally included on the 2008 calendar too.
