Melandri ‘losing time in the corners’

23 August 2012

Marco Melandri says he is thankful for the power of his BMW after admitting his bike might struggle to keep up with its rivals through the twistier sections of the Moscow Raceway this weekend.

The Italian comes to the Russian event in a good position to overhaul rival Max Biaggi at the top of the overall standings for the first time, but felt his chances of success at the Moscow Raceway could be hampered if he is unable to tune the set-up of his S1000RR to suit the low-gear nature of the circuit's first-half.

Despite this, Melandri was still fourth quickest at the end of the day – with team-mate Leon Haslam in second -, the Italian admitting the strength of the BMW engine was helping him make up time on the long straight towards the end of the lap.

“The test was not too bad. The track is pretty fun to ride but I think it is quite small for Superbikes. The turns are very tight and so far I don't think that there are many chances for overtaking in the middle of the track but we will see.

“The track is going to be faster day by day. Today we worked on the gearbox to try to find a good setting to make the bike smoother in the corners.

“On the long straight we can make use of the power of our BMW engine and gain a lot of time, but we are losing time in the corners. We now have to analyse what we did today and try to improve for Friday morning. Ducati seems to be strong here and for us it will not be easy but will do our best and we will see on Sunday.”
