Checa hoping to capitalise on race pace

8 September 2012

Carlos Checa is quietly confident he can challenge for victory at the Nurburgring, despite failing to match his Friday form during Superpole.

The Spaniard was a favourite to take a second consecutive pole position after pacing Q1, but his improvements weren't as pronounced as his rivals once the circuit became faster over the course of Q2 and Superpole.

Qualifying in sixth position, Checa is nonetheless optimistic that the anticipated tyre wear in the races will play to the strengths of the twin-cylinder Althea Ducati, which in turn will bring him into race victory contention.

“Although we were not able to match the pace of the leading riders in the Superpole, I think that we will have the chance to be with them in the race,” he said. “We've seen that the rear tyre performance drops after some laps and so we'll need to try and manage that situation.

“We expect hot races and I think riders will start to suffer with the tyres after about the tenth lap. Overall we have been working well in the sessions and have recorded some good times both in practice and qualifying and I think we have a good race package – the target tomorrow will be to stay in the front group.”
