Laverty adds to Aprilia joy with double podium
10 September 2012
Eugene Laverty had the honour of standing on the podium twice at the Nurburgring as he notched up a brace of second place finishes on a day when Aprilia dominated on BMW's home soil.
After missing out on the podium in Russia when he crashed on the final lap, Laverty did not disappoint on this occasion as he won a tussle for second place with Chaz Davies during the first race, the Irishman contributing to Aprilia's first-ever 1-2-3 finish at WSBK level in the process.
Marking his fourth podium of the season, Laverty went on to make it five in race two, despite lose time with a trip across the gravel trap on the opening lap.
Dropping to seventh, Laverty fought his way back up the order and, motivated by Marco Melandri and Max Biaggi's accidents, was able to snatch second place from Leon Camier with two laps remaining.
His best result since joining Aprilia, Laverty has now moved ahead of Leon Haslam for sixth in the overall standings and is just 12 points adrift of fifth place Jonathan Rea.
“Two great races, without a doubt,” he said. “In race one I was struggling at the beginning and the bike was sliding around a lot, so I had to wait a few laps before I could really start pushing. Toward the end I had to defend against Davies' attacks and I managed to hold onto second place.
“In race two when Tom Sykes overtook me it cost me a few seconds but then I was able to recover and, with the contribution of Max and Melandri's crashes, I found myself within a shout of the podium.
“At that point I had to fend off Camier's attacks, but Chaz had already run away at the front. I'm quite happy with the two second places for Aprilia.
“I'd like to congratulate Davies on a well-deserved victory.”
With Aprilia winning both races, courtesy of Biaggi and Davies, the Italian marque has returned to the head of the manufacturers' standings, ahead of BMW.
