Broken leg ends Canepa’s 2012 campaign

11 September 2012

Niccolo Canepa's racing season appears to be over after he was diagnosed with a broken leg following nasty fall during second free practice at the Nurburgring.

The Italian fell violently from his Red Devils Roma Ducati at turn five during FP2 and was confirmed with a broken right tibia and fibula once he was transferred to hospital.

Undergoing an operation that will keep him hospital bound for the next few days, team manager Andrea Petricca admitted it is unlikely that Canepa will return for the final two rounds of the season in Portugal and France.

"A bad day for Canepa and for all of us,” he said. “Everything seemed to be going well and we were preparing for the Superpole when Niccola fell. I personally accompanied him to the hospital and he was found to have a double fracture of tibia and fibula of his right leg.

“We are very saddened by what happened. Unfortunately I do not think that he will take part in the remaining two races of the season. We do not want to think about his replacement yet, only to make sure that Niccola receives the best care possible.”

Canepa is currently 19th in the standings with a best finish of seventh position, achieved last time out at the Moscow Raceway.
