Biaggi ‘calm and focused’ ahead of title run

3 October 2012

Max Biaggi insists he will approach the title-deciding final round of the 2012 World Superbike Championship season like any other, despite being in a strong position to secure the crown for the second time in his career.

The Italian heads into the season finale at Magny-Cours with a comfortable 30.5 point margin over Tom Sykes meaning he needs just a pair of sixth place finishes at minimum to wrap up the title, regardless of what his Kawasaki rival achieves on the day.

Despite this envious position, Biaggi, also champion with Aprilia in 2010, says he won't be taking anything for granted, adding that the pressure will be on him as he has 'the most to lose'

"I want to tackle this race like any other,” he said. “I know the pressure will be high because of the current standings, but we must not lose focus because we are the ones with the most to lose. Being out front puts you in the bulls-eye. Our rivals know that any weakness on our part could reopen the competition.

“In any case I am calm and focused as always. We've demonstrated that we can do well when we are able to take advantage of every practice session and I can't wait to get onto the track and get to work.”

Biaggi has a decent record at Magny-Cours, winning once on the way to his first title in 2010, while he has never finished lower than sixth in the eight races he has started around the French circuit. He didn't compete in 2011 after he was sidelined by injury.
