Top ten overall for rookie Giugliano

9 October 2012

Having made the seamless transition from Superstock racing to Superbike competition this year, Davide Giugliano can look back on his first season in the World Superbike Championship with fondness after securing a spot in the overall top ten.

The 2011 Superstock 1000 Champion, Giugliano stepped up with the Althea Ducati team in 2012 and has shown impressive flashes on the twin-cylinder machine, securing podiums at Assen and Misano.

Though his hopes of breaking his victory duck at Magny-Cours were scuppered by gearbox woes in race one and getting caught up in Marco Melandri's spectacular crash in race two, Giugliano was pleased to at least secure his first-ever fastest lap at this level.

“The first race was pretty unlucky for us,” he said. “We knew we had good pace and I think we had the potential to finish perhaps third but I had some small problems that prevented me from achieving that – first I had an issue with the gears and then I made a couple of small mistakes, meaning I lost a lot of time.

“In the second race, to tell the truth, I had this dream of winning it. Unfortunately I lost a lot of time when Melandri crashed in front of me and I knew it wouldn't be possible. But anyway I finished ahead of my team-mate and I also won my first Pirelli award for having made the fastest lap, so I'm happy about that.”

Leapfrogging Michel Fabrizio for tenth in the overall standings, Giugliano is expected to stay with Althea Racing when it switches to the new Ducati 1199 Panigale for next season.
