Corti makes pitch with impressive WSBK debut
10 October 2012
Claudio Corti did his chances of securing a return to full-time motorcycling competition little harm at all by producing an impressive double point-scoring performance on his World Superbike debut at Magny-Cours.
Just days after losing his Moto2 ride with Italtrans, despite holding down a top ten position in the overall standings, Corti was snapped up by Pedercini Kawasaki for the final round of World Superbikes instead.
Despite his lack of experience on the Superbike, Corti adapted remarkably quickly to not only crack Superpole, but go on to qualify in an excellent 12th position, ahead of even the factory Kawasaki of Loris Baz.
Come race day, Corti maintained his form, shrugging off the difficult conditions of race one to finish in ninth position, the best result for a Pedercini rider all season, while race two yielded a 12th place, despite the Italian losing time with an early off.
“The first race went well, I was actually stronger when the track was wetter and I was sorry it stopped raining to be honest. It was a very hard race and was very emotional for me to be competing in my first ever SBK race.
“In race two I made a great start and was able to get past a couple of people. Then I made contact with Camier and went long. Once I'd lost that time I was lapping on my own which was hard and with strange track conditions and a tyre that was dropping in performance towards the end.
“All in all it's been a pretty good weekend and I'm happy; I want to thank the team and the Pedercini family for having giving me this opportunity.”
Corti's results in just two races were enough to out-score Leandro Mercado, who completed 14 races for Pedercini Kawasaki earlier in the season.
