Melandri gets suspended sentence
BMW World Superbike star Marco Melandri has been handed a 19 month suspended prison sentence for avoiding millions of euros in tax payments between 2003-2005.

At that time, Melandri was racing in MotoGP and claiming to be resident in the UK, near Donington Park.

However Italian authorities were able to use the flow of Melandri's money and assets to show that his main residence remained in his home town of Ravenna.

Melandri, third in this year's WSBK Championship, has already reached an agreement with the tax authorities.

Countryman Valentino Rossi reached a settlement with the Italian tax authorities in 2008, also relating to UK residency.
