Guintoli keen on Phillip Island prospects

25 January 2013

New Aprilia signing Sylvain Guintoli is confident of his prospects for the opening round of the World Superbike Championship at Phillip Island next month.

Guintoli was sixth fastest in the dry during testing at Jerez this week and was increasing his pace until a crash on Tuesday, from which the French rider escaped with 'a few scratches'.

His teammate in the factory team, Eugene Laverty, also bit the dust and walked away unhurt after a fourth gear high-side.

The test in Spain was hit by rain on Monday but the circuit dried out on day two, giving Guintoli the chance to push the RSV4 harder.

“These were two very interesting days,” he said. “Yesterday [Monday] we had the opportunity to lap on the wet track, gathering important information and getting an idea of my feeling with the RSV4 even in these conditions.

“Today, with the track drying out, lap by lap I was able to find the good pace I had in the last tests. Maybe that led me to push a little too hard and I crashed.

“Fortunately I came away with just a few scratches.

“Before leaving for Australia we'll decide on the definitive technical choices, but I think our prospects are good.”

The three-time World Superbike race winner joined Aprilia following three seasons on Suzuki (2010) and Ducati (2011, 2012) machinery.
