Melandri: More podiums, fewer mistakes

5 February 2013

Marco Melandri says there will be no room for mistakes in his quest to win the 2013 World Superbike Championship after allowing the 2012 title to slip from his grasp.

A spectacular run of mid-season form propelled Melandri and BMW into an unexpected title challenge last year, the Italian's six wins helping him bridge a 60 point deficit to Max Biaggi to briefly nose ahead with only six races to go.

However, his efforts were scuppered by self-inflicted crashes in four of those final six races (including a fifth that he failed to start), dropping him to third in the rider standings and costing BMW a shot at its first manufacturers' title.

Despite this, Melandri remains a strong favourite for the 2013 title with BMW, though the man himself insists he needs to improve his own performances if he is to avoid a repeat of last year's late dramas.

“Going into the season we certainly didn't expect to pick up six wins and be in contention for the title right down to the final race. This year I am primarily looking to improve my own performances. I don't want to make the same mistakes as I did in 2012, and want to make the podium more consistently.”

The factory BMW effort will be overseen by Feel Racing in 2013, the team behind satellite concern BMW Italia for the last two years.
