Marco Melandri has become the first rider to depose Michel Fabrizio from the top of the World Superbike timesheets at Phillip Island so far this weekend, the BMW pacing FP2 despite ending his session in the gravel trap.
The final timed session before Superpole later today, Melandri moved ahead after 20mins and proceeded to lower his lap time to 1min 30.814secs, some five tenths slower than Fabrizio's record-breaking lap in Q2.
Nonetheless, though Melandri would conclude his session with an off at the turn four hairpin, his earlier effort was still enough to stay on top of the pile.
Chasing him up was Aprilia's Sylvain Guintoli, Ducati's Carlos Checa and Kawasaki's Tom Sykes, while Leon Camier made it five different manufacturers inside the top five.
Elsewhere, Honda's Leon Haslam prompted a red flag period early in the session when he crashed at turn eleven, though the Briton would get back onto the circuit later in the session to set the 12th best time.
Missing from the timesheets, however, was Ayrton Badovini, who will miss the remainder of the weekend due to a broken foot sustained in an accident during Q1.
