Front row return but Fabrizio disappointed with third

23 February 2013

Michel Fabrizio admits he cannot help but feel somewhat disappointed to miss out on pole position for the opening round of the 2013 World Superbike Championship season, even if he is starting on the front row for the first time since 2010.

The Italian was earmarked as the favourite to claim an unexpected pole position aboard the satellite Red Devils Roma Aprilia after pacing FP1, Q1 and Q2, but couldn't produce his best when it mattered during the final Superpole phase.

Fabrizio was still fast enough to secure third position on the grid, the first front row start for his Red Devils Roma team since its debut at the start of 2012, while the man himself will have no bike directly in front of him for the first time since Silverstone 2010.

Despite this, four-time WSBK race winner Fabrizio feels he had the form to challenge Carlos Checa's pole position and was disappointed not to go all the way.

“I'm not completely satisfied with my Superpole. After I had been in the lead in all the qualifying runs, I hoped to be awarded the Superpole, but I ruined it in a zone where until now I was very strong, that is the bend before the finish. Anyway the satisfaction remains for the excellent work done with my team and the third place means the first row.

“I expect two long and difficult races. I think that after mid-race we must bite the bullet because we have a good race pace, but on the other hand a lot will depend on the weather. I thank my team as also today they did a great job and a special thanks to those who believed in me.”
