Sykes set for full fitness return at Aragon
30 March 2013
Tom Sykes says he is on course to return to full fitness in time for when the second round of the World Superbike Championship gets underway at Motorland Aragon.
The Briton injured his wrist and his ribs in a pre-season testing accident at Phillip Island, ailments that hampered his performance during the season opener at the same circuit.
Nonetheless, with more than six weeks separating the Australian event and the second round in Spain, Sykes has had the opportunity to focus solely on his fitness, a timely hiatus that he believes will see him back to his best for the second round.
Prior to that, Sykes will be present at Aragon for a pre-event test alongside Kawasaki team-mate Loris Baz, the Briton anticipating that he will be able to complete the full three-day programme.
“In the past few days there has been a real improvement in my physical condition. I will have some final X-rays on my wrist and ribs when I get to Spain and see how we need to play the testing. I am looking forward to the test and we have some new items to try, which should be interesting. I like Aragon because it is enjoyable to ride, exciting, and we have three days there.
In the year that he is being tipped as a title contender, Sykes admits he was pleased the extended six week gap between the opening two rounds have worked in his favour.
“I am looking forward to getting back onto the Ninja ZX-10R because it has been a long layoff since Australia. The break between round one and round two could not have come at a better time for me because I have had time to recover from my injuries.”
Sykes claimed a pair of fifth place finishes during the Phillip Island opening round.
