WSBK Aragon 2013: ‘Limits’ hamper Checa at home

13 April 2013

Carlos Checa was left to rue the notable top speed disadvantage of his Ducati 1199 Panigale as he narrowly missed out on the chance to compete for the front three rows at Motorland Aragon.

The home favourite, returning to action at Aragon after a bruising first round at Phillip Island, has struggled to match his rivals aboard the Alstare-prepared Panigale around the Spanish circuit throughout the weekend, even if he was able to put a top ten challenge together in Superpole.

Claiming the 'current limits' are preventing the team from making progress, Checa's issues were highlighted by him missing the SP3 cut by just 0.030secs whilst giving away 17kph in terms of top speed to Marco Melandri's BMW.

Indeed, though Checa, who started from pole position at Phillip Island, was content with his performance in the circumstances, he is expecting the races to be a tougher prospect.

“We worked quite well but our current limits prevented us from progressing further than the second stage. It's a shame that we missed out on the final phase by such a small margin but I don't think there is much difference between ninth and tenth position in the end.

“We're still having problems through different sections of the track and the others have better top speed of course. Tomorrow will be a really challenging race day – the gap between us and the leaders is pretty big. I can only do my best and we'll see…”
