WSBK Assen: Melandri: I need to rediscover the riding pleasure

29 April 2013

Marco Melandri says his aim is to 'rediscover the riding pleasure' after a troublesome weekend at Assen left him well behind in the fight for the World Superbike Championship.

Following an indifferent weekend at Motorland Aragon, the pre-season title favourite endured an anonymous weekend in the Netherlands as he contended with persistent technical issues on the BMW GoldBet S1000RR.

These problems would prevent him from even making the start of the first race when he slowed on the sighting lap before intermittent sensor issues dropped him down the order in race two.

Securing just a single eighth place finish, Melandri has already slipped 60 points behind Sylvain Guintoli in the standings, a situation he is frustrated to be in.

“It was an awful weekend and today, it was an unlucky day. In race one I did not even start, while in race 2 it seemed that a sensor failed so the bike could not work with the right electronic strategies. I had to slow down for a couple of laps to understand what was going on and what the problem was.

“Once I understood how to manage the situation I returned to my race pace and completed the race. Now we need to understand what does not work and to solve the problem. My aim is to rediscover the riding pleasure, to fight for the podium and to win again.”
