WSBK Monza: Laverty: I thought I’d done it!

11 May 2013

Eugene Laverty insists he is not too disappointed to miss out on that elusive maiden World Superbike Championship pole position, maintaining it is more important that he has a fast bike beneath him ahead of the races.

Laverty was a favourite for pole position heading into Superpole, but while he would lay down an impressive gauntlet with a lap of 1min 41.301secs – almost half a second faster than the previous lap record -, he would fall just short of beating Tom Sykes.

Nonetheless, despite notching up his 16th front row start in 30 attempts without claiming a pole position, Laverty believes the Aprilia RSV4s raw speed – which reached 337.1kph in Superpole – will see him at the front in the races.

“At one point I thought I had done it, but Tom beat me by 78 thousandths of a second. Actually second place on the front row is still an excellent result when you consider our race pace. Tomorrow I hope to be able to take advantage of the full potential of my RSV4.

“The Aprilias are consistently the fastest and that is an important advantage for us. Monza is a special track. Its characteristics adapt perfectly to my bike and the strong points of my riding style.”
