Former winner Baz looking to repeat history
31 July 2013
Loris Baz is in a buoyant mood as he prepares to return to Silverstone this weekend, scene of his famous maiden World Superbike Championship victory in treacherous conditions last season.
Competing in only his sixth WSBK event, Baz caused a major shock by beating his more experienced rivals to victory in the first race of the weekend at Silverstone, the Frenchman's performance made all the more remarkable by the late downpour that made conditions difficult.
Following that up with a run to second position in the sodden second race, Baz's headline-grabbing efforts all-but-assured an extended stay with the Kawasaki team into 2013.
It's fitting then that Baz, who is currently sixth in the standings, admits a return to Silverstone comes at a fitting time, the youngster suggesting he needs a podium-challenging weekend to strengthen his tally of otherwise consistent results.
“I had a short holiday in Spain after Moscow and now I am ready for the Silverstone weekend. After everything that happened in Moscow it will be good to be back racing.
“I really like Silverstone and after I won a race there last year I had a really good weekend. We are at a moment in the season when I need a strong weekend. I think we can make a good weekend and we need it again.
“I am not sure why I like Silverstone but I always enjoyed it when I rode it in Superstock and in BSB. It is a really nice track and to go England is always cool because I know the British spectators and I have some good fans there so I am always happy to go to race in the UK.”
