Foret takes tight Supersport win

13 June 2004

Former World Supersport champion Fabien Foret has taken his first victory of the season at Silverstone today – the Frenchman heading four riders, and three different manufacturers, separated by just 0.7secs by at the chequered flag.

Pole sitter and world championship leader Karl Muggeridge put his Ten Kate Honda in front of Kevin Curtain, Lorenzo Lanzi, Jurgen van den Goorbergh, Foret, Pere Riba, Stephane Chambon and Broc Parkes into turn one, but would soon face a determined assault from Lanzi's Ducati and Foret's Yamaha.

Foret would eventually overtake the Australian on lap 8 of 19, by which time a four-man fight for victory had developed with the presence of Parkes and the still threatening Lanzi.

Parkes would lead briefly on lap 16, but was soon demoted by team-mate Muggeridge, who would then hold the position u until the last lap of the high speed Northamptonshire circuit.

At that point, second placed Foret attacked Muggeridge on the long run down the Hanger Straight, slipstreaming ahead of the CBR by Stowe corner, then holding tight line. However, the Aussie stuck to Foret's rear wheel and dived underneath three corners later at Abbey… only for Foret to sweep back around the outside at the following Bridge turn.

The Frenchman then defended his position against all three pursuers through the remainder of the infield section and, despite Muggeridge getting better drive out of the tight Woodcote Chicane, wouldhold on to take victory by just 0.043secs.

Parkes was 0.25secs behind to complete the podium, while Lanzi duly equalled his and Ducati's best result of the season so far with fourth, a mere 0.7secs from Foret.

Almost two-seconds further back was Curtain, the Yamaha Deutschland rider one-second ahead of Foret's team-mate Jurgen van den Goorbergh, with wild-card Riba seventh for MSS Kawasaki.
