Nitro Nori takes race two at Brands

7 August 2005

Noriyuki Haga fought tooth and nail to fend off Alstare Corona Extra rider Troy Corser during race two at Brand Hatch World Superbikes to take a well deserved win.

Corser attempted a move on the last lap, however he actually made a mistake and ran off the track, he was able to get back on track still ahead of third place man Chris Vermeulen.

Corser admitted that he had decided to follow Haga for a few laps and pass him on the last one: "I thought I'd just sit there and get him on the last lap, but I out-braked myself and to be honest I was lucky to stay on. So I did some motocross across the hill!"

The racing was very close at the front and from the TV coverage it looked like Haga and Corser touched, initially Haga denied this but then said: "Okay maybe we touch a little bit." When he saw Corser run over the grass Haga commented: "I try more hard braking and I see Troy outside track, and I am smiling in my helmet - I'm very happy!"

Vermeulen's team-mate Karl Muggeridge crashed out of third place whist chasing Haga, it was a nasty high side at Graham Hill bend leaving a stunned Muggeridge sat on the tarmac. Vermeulen started from what is known as the gutter at Brands Hatch and had a lot of work to do early in the race.

"It was bloody hard work," said Vermeulen. "A lot of guys were very fast at the start, I'm happy to be on the podium but I couldn't beat Troy." When asked why he didn't do so well in Superpole he simply said: "I had my skirt on - I rode like a girl."

Current World Champion James Toseland had another bad race when tyre choice appeared not to go his way, he was running a 200mm rear which didn't pay off. He had been in third but gradually went back to finish in a lowly seventh position. There was some drama on the grid when Toseland's bike was wheeled off, but it was replaced by his number one machine that his mechanics had just finished working on.

Wildcard rider Dennis Hobbs finished his World Superbike debut in fifteenth place scoring more points. He had to run his number two Nvidia Yamaha machine after his head gasket went in race one, the number two machine was a bit down on power. He also got bumped by two riders early in race two relegating him to twentieth place, so he had to ride hard to get back into the points.

Garry McCoy had a water hose clip go in race one and finished race two in last place, whilst his Foggy Petronas team-mate, Steve Martin crashed at Druids when he got tangled up with Abe.
